Technology Assistance Center Newsletter
A look at the upcoming changes and improvements to the Brightspace learning environment that will take effect during the last week of April and more!
Updates from the Technology Assistance Center
Contacting the TAC
As many of you know, the IT and eLearning staff in the Technology Assistance Center are hard at work addressing the questions, concerns, and needs of our staff, students, and faculty. If you need IT (computer hardware, software, phones, vpn, file shares, etc) or eLearning (Brightspace, Webex, Panopto, etc), please continue to call the general line at 406-771-4440, or email email@example.com for IT issues and firstname.lastname@example.org for eLearning issues.
It is sometimes easier to send instructions by email, so even if you leave a voice message please be sure to watch your email for a response.
Many of you are using Webex to provide live lecture and also recording those lecture sessions, which is fantastic! We have limited storage space available in our Webex system, however we do not have a storage limit in Panopto. So, if you are recording Webex sessions, if you could please download the recordings from Webex once they are available and then upload them to Panopto by:
Navigate to the correct course in Brightspace.
Click on Toolbox > Panopto Recordings.
Click on the Create button and then on Upload Media.
Click on the grey box to select your video.
Select the video to upload.
Let it upload and be processed by Panopto.
From this point, you can either embed the videos in D2L content or direct students to click on Toolbox > Panopto Recordings to view all of your related videos for this course.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Assistance Center at 406-771-4440 or email@example.com.
Hoonuit (Atomic Learning)
GFCMSU has decided to not renew our subscription to Hoonuit. This decision was based on budget concerns as well as low usage of the tool over the last several years that we have had it.
Webex Education Connector
We have integrated Cisco Webex with Brightspace, so it is now possible to add this to any of your courses and schedule and host online lectures from within your course in Brightspace. Students can also see their upcoming online lectures and join them from within the course in Brightspace. If you enable the office hours option, students can schedule online virtual office hours with you right from within your courses. If you are interested in enabling the Webex Education Connector in your courses, please look for instructions in the Webex module of the Faculty Tools Training course shell, which should be available to all instructors. If you do not see the Faculty Tools Training course, or if you have any questions or concerns about the Education Connector, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or call Wayne at 406-771-4444.
Documentation and Resources
If you haven't done so already, please peruse the modules and tutorials in the Faculty Tools Training course within Brightspace. It is full of documentation, much of which includes screenshots, for how to use the tools we are using to deliver courses online, including Brightspace Content, Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes, Panopto, Webex, and much more!
We also have documentation for many more issues, questions, and scenarios in our knowledgebase, which is available by clicking on "D2L Help" from the home screen in Brightspace.
Summer 2020 Course Shells
Course shells for the Summer 2020 semester were made available on April 7th. If you do not see course shells in Brightspace that you believe you should, please click on the course selector (the waffle) and type 202050 into the search field and then hit enter. If you still do not see them, please be sure you've returned your LOA. If you have returned your LOA and still don't see it, please contact your division's admin assistant.
Spring 16-Week and 2nd Block Course Evaluations
Course evaluations will be available from 4/29 at 8:00am to 5/13 at 11:59pm. Nothing has changed with regards to how they are delivered or completed by the students. The easiest method for students to complete their course evaluations is to navigate to any of their courses in Brightspace and click on the Course Evaluations link in the navigation menu. This will open a window or tab with links to click on to complete all of their currently open course evaluations. If any student is having trouble accessing their course evaluations, please direct them to contact the Technology Assistance Center by email at email@example.com.
Assignments - Assignments page column name | Updated
In the Toolbox > Assignments view for instructors, instructors will now see a column called "New Submissions" that will show the number of new assignment submissions that have been made to that folder since assignments were last graded.
Brightspace Pulse - Pin and unpin courses | New
To help learners more easily find their current courses in Brightspace Pulse for iOS, learners can now pin and unpin courses from the Courses screens. Pinning a course ensures it remains at the top of the screen for easy access. Previously, learners could only pin and unpin their courses in Brightspace Learning Environment.
To pin or unpin a course in Brightspace Pulse, do one of the following:
From the Courses screen, tap the ellipses (...) icon in a course tile.
From the Course Homepage screen, tap the ellipses (...) icon at the top of the screen.
From the list of actions, tap Pin or Unpin. A pinned course is denoted by a Brightspace Pulse pin icon pin icon. Unpinning a course removes the pin icon.
Quiz Builder - Export questions to Brightspace Learning Repository | New
As part of the new Quiz Builder experience, users can export questions as a quiz package from Quizzes to Brightspace Learning Repository (LOR). This change enables direct access to quiz questions to LOR from within the Export workflow. Previously, exporting questions as a quiz package from Quizzes to LOR was only available in the legacy screens.
We're Happy to help!
